Knight Edge Media reports that Joel Montgard has been cast in the Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series as Hakoda, the chief of the Southern Water Tribe and father to the siblings who discover Aang. Montgard’s casting rounds out the Water Tribe family which consists of Hakoda, Katara (Kiawentiio), Sokka (Ian Ousley), and the siblings’ mother Kya, who will be portrayed by Rainbow Dickinson.
This will be the first time that Montgard will be working with Ian Ousley but he has already met the rest of his family. Montgard had previously worked with Kiawentiio and Dickinson who played his daughter and wife, respectively, in the 2020 film Beans.
Hakoda is an important addition to the cast of the Netflix show and his story arc is connected to his son Sokka who seeks out his father in the original animated series. In an effort to find Hakoda, Sokka actually ends up working with an unlikely ally and the collaboration leads to an awesome friendship.
For now, it is not revealed how many episodes Joel Montgard will appear in but there is a huge chance that he will have a recurring role.
Avatar: The Last Airbender will also star Gordon Cormier as Aang, Dallas Liu as Zuko, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Uncle Iroh, and Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai. The new series has not yet been given an official release date. However, production has just wrapped and we could be getting news soon. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
