Meanwhile, the anime announcement tweet featured the first key visual for the show. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is a fantasy manga series written by Kanehito Yamada and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe. It is serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday, and it began serialization on April 28, 2020, and has since gotten nearly 100 chapters. This fantasy manga is unique as, unlike other series where a group of adventurers goes on a quest to defeat an evil force, Frieren follows a group that has already vanquished a mighty foe. The story follows Frieren, an elven mage who is a former member of a party of adventurers that defeated the Demon King and brought peace to the land. She was joined in the party by the human hero Himmel, dwarven warrior Eisen, and the human priest Heite.
After defeating the Demon King, Frieren travels the world to pursue more magical knowledge, and the party promises to meet again in the capital after 50 years. Years pass and finally, Frieren returns to the capital and finds that her companions have grown old. As an elf, Frieren has a long lifespan, meaning she’ll outlive all her friends from the party. Soon, Himmel dies of old age, and in response, Frieren sets out to fulfill the last request of her other party member. On top of these, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End was awarded the Grand Prize in the 14th Manga Taisho awards. Creators Yamada and Abe were also awarded the New Creator Prize at the 2021 Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. The manga’s ninth volume is set to release in Japan on September 15, 2022.
