Back to the Future is one of the most beloved movie franchises of all time, and perhaps the greatest trilogy ever made. However, the property has been plagued with rumors of a reboot for decades, and recently, actors Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd, who play Marty McFly and Doc Brown, shared their ideas on what a female-led reboot might look like.
Back to the Future creators Robert Zemeckis (writer and director) and Bob Gale (writer and producer), however, shut down rumors of a reboot long ago, saying that no such thing will ever happen, much to the relief of fans, with the franchise being one of very few yet to be tarnished by the Hollywood knife.
More recently, though, website Giant Freakin Robot, tweeted that an animated Netflix series was in the works, which would be the second such entry in the franchise, following the relatively unknown 1991 cartoon. But the official Back to the Future Twitter account responded to Giant Freakin Robot, with a GIF of Christopher Lloyd simply saying, “It ain’t happening”.
A fan later responded seeking clarity, to which the account replied with a GIF of Marty McFly saying, “The answer is no.”
While the idea of a reboot leaves us wishing we had our own time machine to prevent such a thing from ever happening, an animated series doesn’t seem like such a bad idea. Alas, it isn’t true, but there is an animated Ghostbusters series is in the works at Netflix, so never say never.
As per Wikipedia, here’s the official synopsis for the Back to the Future Trilogy:
