As reported by The Direct, in a recent interview with the YouTube channel Skript, Batgirl directors Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi revealed that they tried to save the footage of the film after the cancellation. However, when they checked the server, they learned that it’s all gone including the scenes that they shot with Michael Keaton’s Batman.
“No, we have nothing,” Fallah said. “Adil called and told me, ‘Go ahead! Shoot everything on your phone!’ I went on the server… Everything was gone. We were [like]… ‘F**ing shit!’… We did not [even] keep [the scenes] with Batman in it.”
The directing duo also revealed that there were additional scenes that needed to be shot prior to the cancellation and the VFX work is also not finished. They also clarified that the cancellation was due to the strategic change, not the quality of the film as some reports have stated.
“The guys from Warner Bros. told us it was not a talent problem on our part or the actress [Leslie Grace], or even the quality of the movie,” they continued. “We were right in the middle of editing. There was a lot of work to get done, so it was not like the movie was finished! Warner Bros. told us the cancellation was a strategic change, a shifting in management so they could save some bucks.”
The situation regarding the Batgirl cancellation was really unfortunate for the people who were involved in the making of the film since no one can see the work that they’ve done ever again. It also looks like we won’t ever see the film in the light of day since it wasn’t finished and it’s also out of the studio’s server.
So far, Warner Bros. has not revealed any plans regarding the future of the character after the cancellation and whether they’ll have Leslie Grace play her in a future project or work with Fallah and El Arbi again.
