In an interview with SlashFilm, one of the film’s stars, Harvey Guillén, who will play an unspecified major role, praised screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer’s ability to meticulously represent Latino culture. He noted that the audience will feel included and seen in the representation.
“You’re going to feel like, ‘Oh my gosh, my culture is on screen. That is how we talk at home. That’s something that we would do. Oh my gosh, that’s something that I went through.’” he said.
Guillén also assured that those who are not familiar or not part of the Latino culture will be introduced properly to the said race or culture. He guaranteed, “If you’re not Latino, it’s going to make you feel introduced and welcomed,”

Blue Beetle focuses on Jaime (Xolo Maridueña), a Mexican-American high schooler who receives a formidable suit of blue alien armor after a mystery scarab connects to his spine, giving him superhuman abilities. He is frequently compared to Marvel’s Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, with a hint of Iron Man due to his iron suit.
Three weeks ago, the movie’s test screening leak circulated online, and YouTube content creator and reviewer Mr. H claimed that the movie will feature a “late ’90s” aesthetic that is expected to target an audience that “will find [the film] endearing.”
Aside from its visual representation, the film is said to be “entertaining” and “kid-friendly.” With a PG-13 rating, Blue Beetle is expected to appeal to both young adults and adults, or the young at heart, who will be “moderately amused.”
Given his heritage, Jaime’s name is accurately pronounced “Hi-May,” with many people confusing it for “Jay-me.” He is the third but most popular blue beetle. Since his comics debut, Jaime has been a part of shows like Smallville, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and most recently, season 2 of Young Justice.
The film also features a cast of industry veterans like George Lopez and Susan Sarandon. The film’s main villain, Victoria Kord, will be portrayed by Sarandon, who recently made her official comic book debut in DC’s Blue Beetle: Graduation Day #2.
Blue Beetle premieres in cinemas on August 18, 2023.
