In the Mugen Train movie, Rengoku arguably stole the show, making his death an even stronger moment. Not only did his death show viewers how powerful members of the Twelve Kizuki are, but it was also a tragic loss of a mentor figure for Tanjiro and company. At Anime Expo 2022, Natsuki Hanae appeared in a Demon Slayer panel. There, he shared some of his thoughts on the series, and among them is how hard Rengoku’s death hit (via Comicbook.com). Natsuki explained that Rengoku’s voice actor is Satoshi Hino, a veteran voice actor and a respected senpai of his. This reflects the dynamic of Tanjiro and Rengoku, making Rengoku’s advice and farewell to Tanjiro seem like Hino giving his guidance to Hanae. The emotional final scene of Rengoku and Tanjiro was moving enough that Natsuki was left in tears following it. Though even if it was a challenging scene to perform, a producer mentioned that Hanae nailed it in just one take. Hino and Hanae turning in impressive performances shouldn’t come as a surprise for anime fans. After all, Hino is an experienced voice actor who has voiced lots of popular characters, including Ainz Ooal Gown in Overlord and Saito Hiraga in The Familiar of Zero, among others. Meanwhile, Hanae is one of today’s most popular voice actors. Aside from Tanjiro in Demon Slayer, he is known for roles such as Ken Kaneki in Tokyo Ghoul, Vanitas from The Case Study of Vanitas, and Kousei Arima from Your Lie in April. Mugen Train is the first movie in the Demon Slayer franchise, and it serves as a sequel to the first season of the TV anime. Released in 2020, Mugen Train became the highest-grossing movie in Japan of all time and the top-grossing movie for the whole year. The movie was followed up by Demon Slayer: The Entertainment District arc. A third season of the anime has been confirmed.
