Jodie Whittaker recently spoke to Radio Times where she was asked what it was like to pass the torch to a new actor. Interestingly, the Attack the Block star pointed out that former Doctors David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Peter Capaldi didn’t try to tell her how to do her job. “This is the only job where you get to go to the next person, ‘Can I just tell you what I think?’ whether they want it or not. David, Matt, and Peter never tried to say to me, ‘This is what it’s going to be like,’ but the one headline they all said was, ‘It’s like nothing you’ve ever done,’” Whittaker said. She then shared her own message for Ncuti Gatwa.
“So what I would say is to just be really, really in the moment. I realised within an hour of starting that I was going to have the time of my life,” Whittaker said. Interestingly, she also revealed that she hasn’t met Gatwa yet. Still, Whittaker believes he will be an excellent job as the new protagonist of Doctor Who. “He’s going to be amazing. Even just hearing his voice you can tell he is someone who speaks with a smile. And I absolutely love that in people. That kind of energy for the Doctor is beautiful,” she said. Ncuti Gatwa is set to debut as the Fifteenth Doctor when Doctor Who returns in 2023.
