In a series of tweets that Gunn posted on Twitter yesterday, he revealed that a new Superman movie is currently in the works in the new DCU franchise. However, Cavill will no longer play the role thus ending his tenure despite his recent comeback. “Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill,” he wrote. Gunn also noted that he had already met with Cavill to inform him about their decision, but he hinted that there is a possibility that he could return to the franchise for another role. “But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future,” the DC Studios co-chairman added. Shortly after the announcement was made, Cavill issued a statement on Instagram where he confirmed his exit and iterated that he respected the decision that Gunn and Peter Safran made regarding his fate in the franchise and the future of the character.
“I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life,” the actor wrote. “The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.” Cavill also thanked his fans for the support that he received. He noted that the character will still be around and is looking forward to seeing the next direction for the hero. “For those who have been by my side through the years…..we can mourn for a bit, but then we must remember…. Superman is still around,” he continued. “Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still there! My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It’s been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards.” It is unfortunate to hear from fans that Cavill will no longer return in the role, especially after seeing his comeback just recently which led a lot of people to hope that we will see more of him in the future. It sounds like the new DCU will now be a complete reboot and we could hear more actor exits soon. As they also teased, there is still a chance for Cavill to return to the franchise for another role so who knows what could happen. Either way, it is exciting to see what plans they have in store for the Man of Steel in the new DCU as well as the actor’s future in his career moving forward.
