In a recent interview with Empire Magazine (via The Direct), Thorne revealed that she actually auditioned for the role of Shuri back in 2016 when Marvel was casting for Black Panther. As we all know, the role ended up going to Letitia Wright, who seems to be taking the mantle of the hero now as suggested by the new trailer. Luckily, Thorne was still able to find her path in the MCU as she eventually got cast to play Riri Williams starting with the Black Panther sequel itself Wakanda Forever, and, soon after, in her own series where she gets to be the center of the story.
The actress also expressed how she thought that the upcoming sequel is the perfect place for Riri Williams to make her MCU debut since it is a “haven for Black brilliance.” “There couldn’t be a safer runway for Riri to come into her genius and her superherodom than in the world of Wakanda, which is known as being a haven for Black brilliance. It’s us getting to know her as she’s getting to know this side of herself, and how she can potentially impact the world,” she said. It is interesting to hear that Thorne almost had a role in the first Black Panther film since things would have definitely been different. Now, we can pretty much say that things went well for them since the actress is now set to become a major force in the MCU with multiple projects already on the line for her and it’s also exciting to see what they have in store more.
