Back in 2021, it was confirmed that Chad Stahelski will direct the Ghost of Tsushima film. Since then, there haven’t been a lot of updates other than Takashi Doscher being announced to pen the screenplay in April 2022. So what are Chad Stahelski’s plans for the project? While promoting Day Shift, Stahelski spoke to Collider and admitted that he has “a bit of a Samurai fetish” and intends to do the adaptation right.
“I think if we did this right, it would be visually stunning. It’s character driven. It’s got an opportunity for great action, great looks. And honestly, we’d to try to do it, all in character. Meaning, it’s a Japanese thing about the Mongols invading Tsushima island. A complete Japanese cast, in Japanese,” Stahelski said, adding that “Sony is so on board with backing us on that.” Stahelski further explained his plans, stating that Ghost of Tsushima could still reach English-speaking audiences. “I’ve been going to Japan since I was 16. I have a love of the country, love of the people, love of the language. To try to direct not only in my language, but someone else’s and culturally shift my mindset to bring apart that in a cool way that still entices a Western audience,” he stated. It’s an ambitious plan considering that Western audiences are still wary of foreign films. Still, with the success of Parasite in recent years, there’s a good chance it could work. Chad Stehelski’s most recent project Day Shift is now streaming on Netflix.
