Little Women Writer Reveals How She Came Up With the Series
On Monday, writer Chung Seo Kyung sat for an interview with The Korea Times via video chat. The screenwriter is also the brain behind the success of The Handmaiden, Decision To Leave, and Thirst. She explained how the K-drama became more than just an adaptation. “The reason I came up with this series was that I had a question: ‘What if three sisters, who are living in poverty, get a huge sum of money?’ The money turns out to have different triggers, like the death of a beloved friend, putting family members and one’s own life at risk, and other social issues,” she said. For what it’s worth, the sisters got a whopping amount of money. As they came from a low-income family, they wanted to become wealthy and make use of that. Chung Seo Kyung made that parallel by showing how and where the money came from. As for how she created the character, the writer said she always starts the process by thinking about how a character holds a purpose in life. With that, she can easily make the viewers sympathize with them.
Little Women Also Earned Praises Because of Scenography
Aside from the storyline and the characters, Little Women also garnered praise for its sets. The team worked with art director Ryu Seung Hee to create the series’ scenography. “As we started the series, I felt that it should carry a sense of ambiguity between fantasy and reality. And to create that ambiance, the visuals were important, so I asked director Ryu to do them. When I saw the filmed scenes, my heart dropped, and thought, ‘People will watch the series to see the visuals. I hope the story can turn out just as good as the visual quality,’” she went on. Little Women aired its 12th and final episode on October 9.
