Lycoris Recoil: Summer 2022’s Surprise Hit
In case you weren’t able to follow the past anime season, Lycoris Recoil (also known as LycoReco) is an original anime series by A-1 Pictures that’s directed by Shingo Adachi and written by Asaura. While it may have flown under the radar ahead of its premiere, the series quickly became one of the most popular and well-received shows of the season. For reference, Lycoris Recoil is the second highest-rated show of the Summer 2022 season on MyAnimeList. As for its story, the series is set in an alternate version of Japan that’s kept safe by “Lycoris,” an all-female group of spies and assassins. Lycoris agents take down criminals and terrorists secretly, without the public knowing. The series follows Takina, a Lycoris agent who is demoted after disobeying orders during a mission. She is assigned to work alongside Chisato, an expert Lycoris agent with unusual methods. Chisato refuses to take the life of criminals and uses non-lethal weapons against them. Despite their personalities being totally opposite, Takina must work together with Chisato if she wants to get her old position back. YOU MIGHT LIKE: The Best Lycoris Recoil Characters Ranked
Lycoris Recoil Director on When He Knew the Show Was a Hit
Because LycoReco is an original anime, it didn’t get as much attention ahead of the Summer 2022 season. Though things changed a few episodes in as more and more fans enjoyed the show. In fact, in late July, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima shared that he’s a big fan of the series, which further boosted the show’s popularity. As for LycoReco’s director, Shingo Adachi revealed that around the release of Lycoris Recoil Episodes 3 and 4, the show’s official Twitter account exceeded 100,000 followers. This was the moment when Adachi knew that the anime was a hit. While he was happy that the anime was well-received, he revealed that he had mixed feelings about the show’s success. This is because Adachi didn’t want to get any unwanted attention, especially as someone who is new to directing anime. Haven’t seen Lycoris Recoil yet?
