During the backstage interview at last night’s Primetime Emmy Awards following his win (via TVLine), Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk addressed the concerns that fans had about the development of the reality show spinoff and revealed that he has met with the people involved in the making of the project who had “many questions” for him. Despite the criticisms that were received when news came that the hit series will be getting a reality show spinoff, Hwang looked at it in an optimistic manner and hoped that the message of the series will still prevail in the end. “What I hope is that they will be carrying on my vision and intention as much as possible for the show,” Hwang said.
“I think that even though our show does carry quite a heavy message — and I know that there are some concerns on taking that message and creating it into a reality show with a cash prize — I feel like when you take things too seriously, that’s really not the best way to go for the entertainment industry. It doesn’t really set a great precedent.” The recently-minted Emmy winner concluded, “So, I would say that reproductions of such efforts are going to bring new meaning to the industry and I hope that this is going to be a great new direction for the industry overall.” It looks like Hwang doesn’t mind Netflix’s plans of doing a reality show spinoff of his series and he has given a seal of approval to the idea despite the criticisms that some people had on the project. It would be interesting to see whether the final results will be able to retain the same success as the main series and the message will be present just like what Hwang hoped. The series made history at last night’s Primetime Emmy Awards as it managed to win in two categories: Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for star Lee Jung-jae and Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for Hwang.
