However, not everyone is a fan of Grogu and one of them is Gremlins director Joe Dante, who compared the breakout Star Wars character to his film’s Gizmo during his recent interview with Datebook. He pointed out that the longevity of both franchises are relying on having a creature who is “essentially like a baby” and thinks that the makers behind The Mandalorian copied Grogu from the Mogwai.
“I think the longevity of (the films) is really key to this one character (Gizmo), who is essentially like a baby”," Dante said. “Which brings me, of course, to the subject of Baby Yoda, who is completely stolen and is just out-and-out copied. Shamelessly, I would think.”
Fairly enough, both Gizmo and Grogu are cute creatures who became an instant breakout sensation when their respective films/TV shows were released and resulted in huge merchandise sales shortly after so there is a comparison that you can make between the two characters in terms of their pop culture impact.
Obviously, they are not the same characters since Gizmo is an Earth-based creature while Grogu is from the galaxy far, far away and is a young Force-sensitive creature who is the same species as Yoda. They might be similar in terms of their popularity and its physical appearance of being cute little creatures, but they still have a lot of differences when it comes to characteristics, species, and personalities.
At the end of the day, whether you agree with Dante’s comment or not, we can all at least recognize that Grogu and Gizmo are cute little creatures and their popularity is immense.
