Disney’s Strange World may have just premiered on November 23, but great news for Disney Plus subscribers, because the film will soon be coming on the streaming site! Strange World is the 61st film from the animation studio that was released over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend in which the animated tale centers Searcher Clade (Jake Gyllenhaal) and his son Ethan Clade (Jaboukie Young-White) embarking on a journey beyond Avalonia with fellow explorers. In an attempt to become like Searcher’s father, the greatest explorer Jaeger Clade (Dennis Quaid), Searcher and his son tread along the uncharted territory to help on the group expedition.

With a production budget between $135 to $180 million, you would expect that Strange World would manage to profit off its opening day, considering it’s family-themed and came from the most highly acclaimed animation studio. However, Strange World merely had $4 million on its opening day, ending the Thanksgiving Weekend with a gross of $18.6 million.
Strange World may have been up in theaters for a month now, but the animated film had fallen short in comparison to previous Disney films such as Lightyear (which accumulated $226.4 million worldwide), and Encanto (which scored $256.7 million globally) with its most popular song, We Don’t Talk About Bruno, surpassing Frozen’s Let It Go.
Apparently, one of the many reasons Strange World had flopped was because of Disney’s lack of promotional marketing in the first place. Without a concrete reason behind this, many fans speculated it was because of its LGBTQ+ theme, particularly represented by Ethan Clade, a biracial gay character. Another is the fact that Strange World’s premiere had to go up against Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Perhaps it’s good news that Strange World will start streaming on Disney Plus, seeing as this would save you the money and definitely watch the film at the comfort of your own home, safe from the pandemic. Hopefully, bringing Strange World to the streaming site would do good on making records.
Strange World premiered in theaters on November 23, but will start streaming on Disney Plus from this coming December 23. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
