Derry Girls is a comedy series written by Lisa McGee. It talks about the lives of five girls (and James) as they grow up in Northern Ireland. The show first aired in January 2018 but it wasn’t until later that year when Netflix exclusively acquired its international rights. After falling in love with the first two seasons of the show, fans can’t help but wonder why there is a delay in airing the coming-of-age comedy on the streaming service. Looking at its track record though, it might take four to ten months before the show will be aired. So while many are keen on waiting for Derry Girls Season 3 to be released on Netflix, we have some news related to the show.
When is Derry Girls Season 3 Coming to Netflix?
Unfortunately, Netflix still hasn’t announced the release date for Derry Girls Season 3. But many are already expecting the show to be released in September, which is four months from its demise on Channel 4 (the UK). This is a possible release date expectation that follows the format of Derry Girls Season 2. It’s also worth noting that the Derry Girls Season 1 released on Netflix 10 months after it aired on Channel 4. So September really is not a definite date to expect the show to land on the streaming service. Unless Netflix says otherwise, it’s possible to see Derry Girls Season 3 get a Netflix release in early 2023. But we’re keeping our fingers crossed. When Derry Girls Season 3 gets released, it will have a total of 7 episodes including a special 45-minute finale. In August 2022, Netflix revealed the Derry Girls Season 3 release date will be on October 7, 2022. This is the final season of the show.
Will There Be More Seasons of Derry Girls in the Future?
No, Derry Girls has been cancelled. In an interview with Deadline, McGee said: “It was always the plan to say goodbye after three series. Derry Girls is a coming of age story following five ridiculous teenagers as they slowly… very slowly… start to become adults, while around them the place they call home starts to change too and Northern Ireland enters a new more hopeful phase — which was a small, magical window of time. Derry Girls is a love letter to the place I come from and the people who shaped me. It has been an honour to write it and I will be forever proud of everything it’s achieved. Who knows if Erin, Clare, Orla, Michelle, and James will return in some other guise someday, but for now this is it for us and we’re excited to start filming this [season] with our incredible cast and crew to hopefully take our loyal fans on one last adventure.” The showrunner also shared this statement on her Twitter account.

McGee previously wanted to add Irish comedy legend Dara Ó Briain to Season 3. But due to filming commitments brought about by the pandemic, some adjustments had to be made. One of those adjustments is scaling back Nicola Coughlan’s role in the final episodes. Speaking to Belfast Live, Coughlan said: “We had to make compromises happen in the script of Derry Girls. It was devastating to me because I wanted to be in all of this.”
