But will the new The Princess Diaries movie be a reboot or a sequel to the original Anne Hathaway-led movies? More importantly, will our favorite actress be back to reprise her role as Princess Mia of Genovia? Here’s what we know about the film so far.
Will the New The Princess Diaries Movie Be a Reboot?
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is currently working on a third The Princess Diaries movie that will be a continuation of the first two films instead of a reboot. A source for the publication confirmed this, along with news that Aadrita Mukerji has been tapped to write the script for the third film. Mukerji is famous for her work in other shows like Reacher and Supergirl.
Who’ll Be Part of The Princess Diaries 3 Cast?
The most important question related to this news is whether Anne Hathaway will be back to reprise her role as Princess Mia Thermopolis of Genovia. According to sources, Hathaway does not have an existing deal with Disney right now. But the actress previously expressed her support for a third film. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Hathaway said that she would be interested to return for the beloved role along with her on-screen grandmother, Julie Andrews.
“I would more than entertain it, I’m pulling for it. If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work.” Andrews played the role of Princess Mia’s grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi. The other names attached to the film series include Heather Matarazzo, Héctor Elizondo, and Caroline Goodall. And of course, there’s the black and white cat of Mia named Fat Louie.
Who Will Direct The Princess Diaries 3?
The two The Princess Diaries movies were directed by Garry Marshall, who passed away in 2016. A director for the third film has not yet been announced. Along with the first two The Princess Diaries films, Debra Martin Chase continues to produce the third installment. Meanwhile, Melissa Stack is executive producing the film.
We’ll update this post once more information becomes available. For now, here’s a look back at the film that catapulted Hathaway into instant stardom.
